Just as with everything else to do with weddings, Wedding Cakes change with the times.
Unless you are in the islands, its very rare to have a fruit cake wedding cake. Yet 20 years ago, it was unheard of not to distribute pieces of fruit cake wrapped in plastic wrap, a doily and a piece of ribbon. And it would be very odd to see a gargatuan cake, complete with staircases, pillars and a lit-up fountain at a wedding today, yet in the 90’s people would have been “Wowed”.
Today, cakes are as personal as every other aspect of the wedding. Instead of just being a white showpiece, the cake is expected to fit in with the overall theme and style of the wedding. Today’s cakes are stacked, usually covered in fondant and need to taste as good as they look.
So what’s hot for 2010?
Shapes
Cakes are stacked with alternating shapes. Hexagons, petals, squares and circles are the most common.

Chocolate Cakes
Usually made of a Chocolate fondant, these cakes make a big impact and clearly show the couples’ love of Chocolate!
Intricate Scrollwork
Usually decorated freehand, this labour-intensive design gives a very classy look to the cake.
Colour
Colour is being used either as a bold accent or a soft base of the cake. When colour is being used for the entire cake it is a pastel and has a Wedgewood look and feel to it.

lovely article!! i am loving the latest trends in cakes (and invites, but that is another story!) i love how they are becoming real pieces of art and are truly embodied in the theme of the wedding!
ps. a word to the wise — do not read this article at 2am, when there is NO chance of a store being open that sells anything remotely close to a cake =)

Loving the details that couples are using on cakes now! Although, I would love to do a wedding where the couple wanted to have a staircase, lol.

The wedding cake is one of the ways a couple’s combined personality can be displayed. The flavour, the colours, the size, and the details, (in some cases the topper) all come together nicely transforming a simple wedding cake to one that is true originality and creativity at its … for anyone’s wedding day! Kudos to cake designers!
