April 22nd is globally known as Earth day! During April, environmental activists join together to highlight the beauty of our natural land. From small businesses to large corporations, everyone has a part to play in combating climate change. As an event planning company, no matter what your niche is, YOU have the power to help spread awareness this Earth Day.
So, the question is why should you care and what can you do to help?
Why You Should Care
Plastic pollution and food waste are two major environmental issues putting our planet at risk, and unfortunately, the wedding industry includes plenty of both.
Let’s Talk Plastic
Favours wrapped in cellophane, disposable cups, plastic table numbers, and acrylic cake toppers: these are just a few examples of items that are generally used at weddings that can easily be replaced with eco-conscious alternatives. Always suggest plastic-free alternatives to your clients when you can.
In 2020, microplastics were found in the placentas of unborn babies for the first time ever; thus, providing evidence that plastic is starting to affect human DNA. How crazy is that? Not only is plastic pollution creating environmental destruction and destroying animal habitats, but it’s also harming our health and our genetics!
Let’s Talk Food Waste
This might come as a surprise to you because it definitely shocked me! According to Second Harvest, 58% of food produced in Canada is either lost or wasted. This is why it’s vitally important to do what we can to lower this number.
In Toronto, you can ask venues or catering companies that you work with to sign up for Second Harvest’s Food Rescue Program. This program collects leftover food after the event to help feed families in need. Check out the non-profit organizations in your area to see if there are similar programs.
