I’ve been working in the wedding industry as a professional wedding planner for twenty-one years. I’ve also been educating and training wedding professionals for eighteen of those years. While I have experienced many situations where I have had to problem-solve, smooth things over and come up with solutions on the spot, there are just some things that I have had to step back, regroup and do some more research before tackling a particular problem or concern.
It’s impossible to know the response to everything.
I would hate to give incorrect or inaccurate information in regards to someone’s wedding just because I was put on the spot and felt pressured to give a response right away. That would be irresponsible and just plain wrong.
“When it comes to business, there’s no such answer as “I don’t know” ~Jeanne Sullivan
Here are some appropriate responses to give when you are unsure of the answer:
- “That is a great question, and I have some thoughts on this subject, but I’d like to research that a bit more in-depth. This way I can give you the most accurate and current information that I can.”
- “This is a bit of a tricky situation. I’d like to ask a few of my colleagues for their opinion and advice on how best to handle this situation before responding.”
- “Based on what we know so far, my thoughts on this are…”
- “This is a great question. I will get back to you later on today with the answer.”
To sum this up, while it’s true that we can’t possibly know everything, it’s important to instill confidence and show our clients that we are on top of things and will find out a solution to a question or challenge.
