Insights from “From The Bahamas with Love”
by Karolina Fernandes, DWS, of Diamonds Destination Weddings
At the end of February, I had the opportunity to attend From The Bahamas with Love, a multi-day immersive program for international wedding professionals held from February 28 through early March. The event, organized annually by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation (BMOTIA) as part of the country’s broader Romance Week, brings together planners from around the world to experience the destination firsthand while connecting with local industry partners.
Programs like these are becoming increasingly important in the destination wedding space. Many planners are curious about what these events involve, who they are designed for, and how they support professional growth.
After attending the program firsthand, I wanted to share a few insights into how destination immersion events work and why they can be valuable for planners working in the international wedding market.
Why Immersive Experiences Matter
Unlike traditional conferences or trade shows, destination immersion programs allow wedding professionals to experience a destination beyond brochures or social media imagery.
Hosted by tourism boards or destination organizations, these programs invite planners to explore different regions, meet local vendors and better understand the cultural and logistical aspects of planning weddings there.
As an international destination wedding planner based in Canada and working closely with destinations across the Caribbean and Mexico, I’ve learned that nothing replaces experiencing a place firsthand. After more than a decade in the industry, programs like these continue to provide valuable insight, inspiration and professional connections.
Immersion events are not only educational — they are also an investment in the knowledge and relationships that help planners better serve their couples.
Experiencing the Islands
One of the highlights of the program was the opportunity to explore several islands across The Bahamas, each offering its own personality and wedding potential.
Participants were introduced to Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, Exuma, Harbour Island, Andros and Abaco, providing a broader understanding of the destination’s diversity.
One experience I personally attended was a pineapple farm tour in Eleuthera, which offered insight into the island’s agricultural traditions and local culture.
Experiences like these remind planners that destination weddings are not only about the ceremony location—they are about creating a meaningful guest experience connected to the place itself.
Connecting With the Local Wedding Industry
Another valuable part of the program was the opportunity to connect directly with Bahamian wedding professionals.
The week included a symposium featuring speakers and panel discussions, along with a mini-marketplace where planners were introduced to local vendors and tourism representatives.
A particularly important connection for many planners was the Bahamas Bridal Association, which brings together venues, planners and wedding vendors across the destination. For international planners, organizations like this can become essential partners when coordinating weddings abroad.
Building strong local relationships is often one of the most important factors in the success of destination weddings.
Venue Site Visits
The program also included opportunities to explore a range of wedding venues across The Bahamas.
During the week, I personally visited The Cove Eleuthera and The Other Side in Eleuthera, both offering beautiful settings for destination weddings and intimate celebrations.
Additional site visits and presentations introduced planners to several well-known properties across Nassau, including Sapodilla Estate, Atlantis Paradise Island, The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, Grand Hyatt and Sandals Royal Bahamian.
The hosting property for the week was Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau, which served as a central hub for many of the program’s activities.
Seeing these venues firsthand allows planners to better understand the range of wedding environments available, from boutique island properties to larger resort settings suited for grand celebrations.
Evening Experiences & Industry Networking
Beyond the educational sessions and site visits, the program also offered memorable evening events that highlighted Bahamian culture and hospitality.
The opening night was hosted at the British Colonial Hotel, where planners were welcomed with live Bahamian music and cultural experiences such as cigar rolling and henna painting. The evening also included a welcome from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, the Hon. I. Chester Cooper, highlighting the importance of the romance travel sector to The Bahamas’ tourism strategy.
Another evening event hosted at Grand Hyatt featured creative experiences including sip-and-paint, mask making, and live performances in the garden, offering planners a glimpse into the types of immersive guest activities couples could incorporate into their wedding celebrations.
The program concluded with a memorable closing dinner hosted by The Island House, an outstanding boutique property. The evening included exceptional cuisine, Junkanoo dancing, interactive experiences such as perfume making and face painting, and a lively celebration reflecting the vibrant spirit of the destination.
Perhaps most importantly, these evenings created opportunities to build meaningful connections with planners from around the world, including professionals from the United States, Europe, Brazil and Canada.
Why These Events Matter for Planners
Destination immersion events are particularly valuable for planners who are already working in the destination wedding space or looking to expand into international markets.
Attending programs like From The Bahamas with Love allows planners to:
- deepen their knowledge of a destination
- build relationships with local industry partners
- gain firsthand insight into venues and guest experiences
- confidently guide couples considering the destination
While some of these programs involve travel costs or participation fees, they are best viewed as an investment in professional development and long-term industry relationships.
Closing Insights
In destination wedding planning, expertise is built through experience, relationships and continuous learning.
Programs like From The Bahamas with Love provide planners with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a destination while strengthening connections within the global wedding community.
For couples, this translates into working with professionals who truly understand the destinations they recommend. For planners, it is a reminder that investing in knowledge, travel and industry relationships continues to shape the way we grow within the international wedding industry.
