When someone discovers what I do for a living, the reaction is almost always the same:
“OMG, you’re a wedding planner? That must be SO fun! Is it like that J. Lo movie?”
My answer?
“Some of it… but we don’t steal the fiancés.”
The truth is, most people have no idea what wedding planners actually do. Pinterest boards and champagne flutes are a tiny part of the job. Real wedding planning is strategic, detailed, emotionally intelligent, physically demanding, and highly rewarding.
If you’re considering this career, here’s an honest, inside look at what being a wedding planner really requires, so you can decide if this exciting profession is right for you.
What Wedding Planners Really Do (Spoiler: It’s Not All Glamour)
You’re a Business Owner First
Most wedding planners run their own businesses or work as independent contractors. That means your days include:
- Managing inquiries and client onboarding
- Sending proposals, contracts, invoices
- Creating timelines and schedules
- Marketing your business and maintaining social media
- Networking with venues and vendors
- Tracking expenses, taxes, and administrative work
- Ongoing education, conferences, and training
Wedding planning is 20% weddings and 80% running a business, and you need strong systems to succeed.
The Skill Set You Actually Need
1. Project Management Skills
Every wedding is a full-scale project with dozens of logistical layers:
- Vendor coordination
- Floor plans and layouts
- Transportation and logistics
- Rehearsals and ceremony flow
- Precision timing
- Contingency planning
- Production schedules
If you love organizing, planning, and problem-solving, you’ll thrive here.
2. Communication & Diplomacy
Wedding planners handle:
- Emotional couples
- Stressed families
- Large wedding parties
- Competing opinions
- Cultural and religious considerations
- Guests who “just have one little question”
Your job: lead with confidence, kindness, and calm solutions.
3. Creative Vision (If You Offer Design)
Some planners also offer full wedding design. That includes:
- Vision development
- Mood boards and colour palettes
- Décor and rental selection
- Floral guidance
- Lighting recommendations
- Style execution
Wedding design is an art form, and a separate service from planning.
What Happens on a Wedding Day
Wedding days are full-on marathons, literally… many planners hit 18,000+ steps (I once hit that before 3pm). A professional planner:
- Oversees every vendor
- Manages deliveries
- Directs the wedding party
- Troubleshoots issues
- Coordinates ceremony + reception flow
- Ensures timelines run to the minute
- Protects the couple from stress
- Leads the entire event from start to finish
Planners are the director, producer, stage manager, and problem-solver of the wedding day.
