Why Wedding Professionals Need to Stop Judging Budgets and Start Understanding Value
by Danielle Andrews, President and Co-Founder of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada Inc.
There is a phrase that gets thrown around far too often in the wedding industry. “It’s just one day.” Or perhaps even worse: “I would never spend that much on a wedding.”
Every time a celebrity wedding makes headlines or a couple shares their budget online, the comments inevitably fill with people calling weddings “a waste of money.”
As wedding professionals, we need to see things differently. The truth is, every wedding is a luxury wedding. Not because every couple is spending six or seven figures, but because hosting a wedding itself is a luxury.
Luxury Isn’t About the Price Tag
When people hear the word luxury, they often picture designer gowns, elaborate floral installations, Michelin-starred catering, or destination celebrations in castles overlooking the sea. Those weddings certainly exist. But luxury is not defined by the amount spent.
Luxury is being able to gather the people you love in one place to celebrate one of the most important days of your life. For many people, that may be the only time in their lives they ever host an event with 100, 150, or 250 of their closest family and friends.
Outside of weddings, very few people ever rent an entire venue, hire chefs, musicians, photographers, florists, entertainers, transportation, decorators, and coordinators simply to celebrate. That experience is extraordinary. That is luxury.
Every Couple Has Their Own Version of Luxury
A couple with a $15,000 wedding budget isn’t trying to recreate a $500,000 celebrity wedding. They’re creating the most beautiful celebration they can within the resources they have.
Luxury may mean:
- Fresh flowers instead of artificial ones.
- A live musician during the ceremony.
- A signature cocktail.
- Upgraded linens.
- Beautiful stationery.
- A late-night snack.
- Professional photography.
- A wedding planner who allows them to actually enjoy their day.
Those touches matter. They create emotion. They create memories. Luxury isn’t measured by dollars. It’s measured by intention.
The Internet Has Become Far Too Comfortable Judging Wedding Budgets
One of the more disappointing trends in recent years has been the growing tendency for people online to criticize how much couples spend on their weddings.
The comments usually sound something like:
“Imagine putting that much money into one day.”
“What a waste.”
“They should have bought a house instead.”
But here’s the reality. It’s only a waste of money if you’re spending money you don’t have. If a couple has planned responsibly, saved for years, received support from family, or simply chosen to prioritize their wedding over other purchases, then that is their decision.
No one questions someone spending tens of thousands of dollars on:
- A new boat.
- A luxury vehicle.
- A motorcycle.
- Designer handbags.
- Golf memberships.
- Home renovations.
- Travel.
Those purchases rarely receive the same level of public criticism. Yet somehow weddings are expected to justify every dollar. Why? Perhaps because everyone has attended one. Perhaps because everyone believes they know what a wedding should cost. Or perhaps because weddings are emotional purchases rather than practical ones.
But joy has value. Celebration has value. Creating lifelong memories has value. Bringing generations of family together has value. Those things don’t appear on a balance sheet.
Wedding Professionals Set the Tone
As planners, coordinators, venues, photographers, designers, florists, officiants, and other wedding professionals, we have an important responsibility. We should never be the ones minimizing a couple’s vision because of our own personal opinions about money. Our job is not to decide whether something is “worth it.” Our job is to help clients maximize the value of their investment.
That means asking questions like:
“What matters most to you?”
“How do you want your guests to feel?”
“What memories do you hope people take home?”
Those answers matter far more than the budget number itself.
Luxury Exists at Every Budget
One of the biggest misconceptions in our industry is that luxury only belongs to high-end weddings.
In reality, thoughtful planning creates luxury. Warm hospitality creates luxury. Excellent service creates luxury. Feeling cared for creates luxury.
I’ve seen intimate weddings in community halls that felt incredibly elegant because every guest was welcomed with genuine warmth and thoughtful details. I’ve also seen expensive weddings where guests felt like spectators instead of participants.
Money alone doesn’t create an unforgettable experience. People do.
Helping Couples Navigate Difficult Conversations
Many couples face criticism long before their wedding day. Friends question their priorities. Family members suggest cutting corners. Social media convinces them they’re spending too much, or not enough.
Wedding professionals have an opportunity to become a calming, objective voice. Instead of encouraging couples to justify every decision, remind them to come back to what matters most.
Ask:
- Will this enhance your experience?
- Will this create a memory you’ll treasure?
- Does this align with your priorities?
- Can you comfortably afford this?
If the answer is yes, then there is no reason for guilt. There is no universal “correct” wedding budget. There is only the budget that is right for that couple.
Respect Every Celebration
One of the healthiest mindset shifts a wedding professional can make is to stop mentally ranking weddings.
A backyard wedding deserves the same enthusiasm as a ballroom wedding. A brunch wedding deserves the same care as an evening gala. A micro wedding deserves the same professionalism as a 400-guest celebration. Every couple has chosen to invest in celebrating their relationship. That deserves respect.
The size of the investment may change. The importance of the day does not.
Final Thought
The next time someone says weddings are a waste of money, remember this: People rarely regret celebrating love.
They remember the laughter. They remember grandparents dancing. They remember hugs from relatives they may never see again. They remember speeches that brought everyone to tears. They remember photographs that become family heirlooms. They remember the feeling of being surrounded by everyone who mattered, all in one room, celebrating a new beginning. That is not a waste. That is one of life’s greatest luxuries.
As wedding professionals, let’s remember that every wedding is a luxury wedding, not because of how much is spent, but because of what it represents. Whether a couple is investing $10,000 or $500,000, our role is the same: to honour their vision, respect their priorities, and help them create an experience that feels extraordinary to them.
Because luxury isn’t measured by a budget. It’s measured by the memories that last long after the last dance.
