The hopes, the dreams the anticipation
At last the day has come,
The flowers are beautiful, the weather is perfect
The excitement is contagious
The house so alive with joy
Among the pearls and lace
She sits, lost in her thoughts,
The wonder of a new life
The first tears, the first smile,
All of these and more
The joys, the heart breaks,
The difficult times and the triumphs,
Things that only seemed to have been yesterday,
Now a lifetime away.
As she prepares to start a new life
Now is the time to look forward, and leave the past.
Walking down the aisle you’ll notice a tear in her eye,
Know that it holds a lifetime of memories
The sadness of letting go,
The pride of seeing the person you’ve become
The happiness she shares on your special day
Someday, you too will take her place,
And understand,
As you watch your daughter walk down the aisle.
Now, years later, holding my 3 year old daughter in my arms as she drifts off to sleep, I can't help but think of the day she might someday wed. Not sure I could handle that day as gracefully as my own mother. I can now appreciate just what she meant when she wrote that. I now realize how emotional that day really was for her, reflecting on her child's life, growing so quickly that this day, this wedding day, has finally come.
How precious time fleets from us, and one minute they are babies, then learning to walk and talk.
One minute, my baby girl is in pig-tails singing "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows" and in just a few years, she will be humming along to some latest teenaged tune on the radio. Soon the dolls will be traded in for curling irons, and she'll talk on the phone for hours. Then as fast as it all will come, she will one day meet someone she will want to spend the rest of her life with.
And so begins a new chapter, a new family, a daughter of my own, and one day will take the place of my Mother as I see her cling to her father's arm, and leave our nest for one of her own.
