1) Tell us about your wedding planning business. How did you start and when? What is your niche?
SJ Soirée is a boutique wedding planning company where my team and I take on a select number of clients each year to ensure a highly personalized and seamless experience. I launched my business in 2018, but my love for events started long before that. With a background in business, majoring in marketing and sales, I had the opportunity to lead and plan conferences during my time in school. After a few years in the corporate world, I realized I was missing the human connection in my work, which ultimately led me to follow my passion for weddings and events full-time.
Our niche is fusion weddings—blending cultures, traditions, and backgrounds to create meaningful celebrations. We plan weddings of all kinds, but where we truly excel (and what we’re most passionate about) is weaving together different cultural elements in a way that tells each couple’s unique story. Storytelling is such a huge part of wedding planning, and we love learning about our couples—their backgrounds, traditions, and what makes their love story special—so we can bring that to life in an intentional and thoughtful way.

2) What have been the biggest challenges you have overcome? (Imposter syndrome, trusted connections, networking, business systems, etc.)
One of the biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome is imposter syndrome. Coming from a business background rather than hospitality, I initially felt like I had to prove myself in an industry that requires wearing multiple hats. As a wedding planner, you need to understand the roles of your caterer, photographer, venue manager, and so many other vendors—it can feel overwhelming when you don’t have formal training in those areas.
In my early years, there was a steep learning curve, and while I’m still learning to this day, I’ve realized that experience is the best teacher. Over time, that feeling of doubt faded as I gained hands-on knowledge and built a strong network of trusted professionals. Now, I have an incredible team with expertise in areas like catering and venue management, and we constantly learn from one another. Every wedding teaches us something new, and that’s what makes this industry so exciting.

3) Words of wisdom, or how did you decide on your niche.
When I first started SJ Soirée, I didn’t have a set niche in mind—I just knew I wanted to create beautiful, meaningful celebrations for couples. Over time, I started attracting couples who were blending cultures, traditions, and backgrounds, and I quickly realized how much I loved that aspect of wedding planning. Fusion weddings allow us to tell a unique story by weaving together different traditions in a way that feels intentional and personal.
If I’ve learned anything, it’s that your niche often finds you. The couples who come our way inspire the work we do, and I love that every wedding is a chance to learn something new, embrace different cultures, and create celebrations that are truly one of a kind.

4) We see that you have revamped your website and grown your team. How did you know it was time to do this?
I’m very lucky that my fiancée, who’s a website designer, has helped me from day one with my website. I truly believe your website is your homefront, and it should be revamped every year to reflect your growth, especially when you’re in the wedding business. It’s the perfect way to showcase how far you’ve come. Growing the team, even as a boutique planning company, became necessary because there’s a lot of admin work and other event avenues, like birthday parties and corporate events. You just know it’s time when things start to feel a bit too overwhelming.

5) Destination weddings are a part of your services. What has been your favourite location so far and why?
I’m actually so excited for our first destination wedding in Mexico this year! I leave this month for the planning meeting, and the wedding itself is in November. Over the last couple of years, I’ve also had the chance to visit Paris and the South of France to learn about their wedding industry, and I’m hoping to plan a wedding in Europe soon! It’s been such an exciting journey, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
We wish you continued success, and will be proud cheerleaders each step of the way!
