It’s the time! The DJ calls you and your new spouse to the dance floor for the first dance. It’s an exciting moment that’s bound to have a few butterflies, as you and your partner get ready to move to that perfect song.
The first dance is a tradition that has been around for centuries, dating back to the grand balls that were put on by aristocrats primarily in Europe. Back in those times, dancing during these formal gala events was started by the guest (or guests) of honour at the end of a Grand Entrance. It is a sign to the guests that the dance floor is open!
The purpose of today’s first dance hasn’t really changed, but the focus has shifted from dance for the guests to a dance that is a romantic moment for the couple.
So, how do you come up with the perfect song? There are a couple of questions to ask yourself when you’re trying to pick something:
- Are there any songs that are tied to fun or meaningful moments and memories for you as a couple? I once DJed a wedding for a couple who met at a Trews concert. They chose an acoustic version of the song “11:11” as their first dance to pay tribute to the event where they found each other.
- Do you and your spouse-to-be have any favourite bands or singers? Look to your common musical loves to find a song that you love.
- What mood do you want your first dance to have? Not every first dance needs to be a slow, hug-and-sway song. If that vibe doesn’t suit you and your partner, mix it up!
- Love the song, but not a fan of the style for your first dance? Look for cover versions! I had a wedding couple who loved heavy metal music but didn’t want it at their wedding because it didn’t feel appropriate for the feel they were going for. They ended up selecting Apocalyptica’s string quartet cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” for their dance which was a better fit for what they wanted.
These tips can also apply to selecting songs for your ceremony, Grand Entrance, and parent dances!
