Vancouver Wedding Planner, Crystal Chiang, WPICC, of Luxe Weddings by Crystal Chiang, shares her own wedding with us.
How did you two meet?
We used to live in the same building. Peter became friends with my dad back in 2008 because they used to walk dogs together. He didn’t know me at the time and I didn’t meet him until about a year later when I was taking a walk with my parents and bumped into him. My dad introduced us. He didn’t know my dad had a daughter living in the same building either. Peter and I didn’t start dating until almost summer 2014, we were both single for about 5 years before and we weren’t even friends before March 2014… it was a lot of “hi” and “bye” in the building, that was about it.
Tell us about the proposal and engagement:
We are both from traditional families, before Peter proposed to me, he wanted to ask my parents for their blessing. At the time, my parents happened to be on vacation visiting my sister overseas, Peter contacted my sister to setup a video call so he could talk to my parents “face to face”. No one knew what the video call was about (it was a surprise for them too) until he asked them if he could marry me, and everyone was really ecstatic.
On the day of the proposal, Peter took me to the Teahouse Restaurant in Stanley Park in Vancouver for a romantic dinner. Before the sun went down, we sat on the bench looking at the ocean, he took out the engagement ring and asked me if I would spend the rest of my life with him.
Date of the Wedding: November 11, 2017
Wedding theme and colours:
Theme: Vintage Luxury.
Colours: Ivory, gold, blush and dash of red
We (mostly me) decided to go with ivory and gold as our main colours because they are also the colours/decor of our venue. We added blush to the flowers to soften the look and red for our wedding favours. Red is consider a lucky colour in the Asian culture, so I wanted to incorporate it into part of the overall décor. Dark red is also part of our venue’s colour (it’s in their carpet and also their banquet chairs), in the end these colours worked out perfectly.
Where did you get married and why did you choose that particular venue?
We got married at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. I wanted a venue that carries a rich history with a vintage and luxury look, preferably with high ceilings with a large chandelier and close to home. Fairmont Hotel Vancouver was the absolute perfect venue for us.
How many wedding guests did you have? 50
What did you love best about your wedding day and why?
Every bit of it. Since I was also the planner and decorator, I was having a lot of fun planning the wedding and decorating the venue myself. Our guests were really impressed by how well the wedding was organized and we all had an amazing time celebrating our marriage.
Tell us about a special moment that happened during the wedding day that you think will stay with you forever:
Our family and friends’ speeches. Most of our family and friends had to fly in from overseas or out of town, it was such a special moment when they share their feelings with us and joy from the hearts. We were all very moved by my sister’s speech since she was representing my (our) parents. My dad unfortunately had an emergency and was taken to the hospital the day before our wedding (and he ended up having a mini operation and stayed in the hospital for 10 days), and he was the reason Peter and I got to where we are today, so my sister’s speech really touched everyone who attended our wedding.
What are your top 3 favourite wedding details (cake, flowers, dress, band, etc.) and why?
1) Our entire décor, favours, and displays. Almost everything was designed or handmade by me and Peter.
2) Our live musicians. They were absolutely perfect.
3) Our flowers. They were over the top amazing.
Where did you go for your Honeymoon?
We haven’t had time to go on proper honeymoon yet, but since the wedding we have gone on couple trips to Asia and to the US.
