Thank you to WPIC alumni, Pam Fleming of Matters of Gathering for this creative and fun wedding styled-shoot submission.
The Hangar Flight museum in Calgary, Alberta is home to several historic and carefully curated aircraft that add a distinctive and timeless allure for couples searching for a unique wedding venue. The unexpected combination of love and aviation history creates a visually compelling narrative with a classic industrial feel. For this styled photoshoot, we created an elegant love-story design that captured the essence of aviation history. The images were taken against the backdrop of 2 historic aircraft: the Avro 652 Anson MK II which served throughout WWII and a Mark IV Harvard which served in Canada as a military plane from the 1950s.
Our couple’s attire was chosen to be as classic and timeless as the airplanes drawing attention to the minimalist gown with royal train and a classic black suit and tie. Vintage luggage and flowing fabric framed the alter with elegance and whimsy while a posey sized bouquet allowed the wedding gown to make a statement. A darker shaded lip, contoured eye and neutral tones made our bride look stunning amongst the timeless artifacts.
The industrial feel was created using steel tolix chairs, galvanized tins, ceramic plates and matte satin linen which all blended in with the cement flooring allowing you to imagine dining on an airplane runway. The themed stationery along with an in-flight menu card added a sense of anticipation for an aviation adventure. The yellows, whites and blues chosen for the floral were light and airy yet complemented the vibrant colors of the aircraft.
The vintage wheeled champagne cart was home to a charcuterie platter and the ever classic lemon tart pie. The aircraft in the background provided discussion points for our happy couple as they sipped on some bubbly to celebrate their union. Working with the events team at the Hanger Flight Museum was a warm and welcoming experience. Their venue is an amazing photo ready space that supports weddings, non-profit and corporate events throughout the year.
The history of aviation is closely tied to Canada’s development as a nation and to Calgary’s development as a vibrant, international city. As a non-profit, hosting events at the Hangar Flight Museum supports the ability of the museum to continue to share history, run education programs and connect communities.
As a newcomer to the wedding industry, I am so very grateful for the new and veteran vendors who were willing to listen, share ideas and take part in this debut wedding design. The team wholeheartedly welcomed the photoshoot, got down to business, and fostered a highly rewarding collaborative spirit – Calgary style!
