Wedding planners have had a great past few years as the wedding industry continued to make waves in 2023 and into 2024. The wedding industry in Toronto and Canada as a whole has seen a significant shift. Millennials and Gen Z are 61% less likely to marry or live with a partner. Some of the cited reasons include the rising cost of living due to inflation, declines in secular religious belief, and a change in perspective for younger people.
At the same time, Canadians who want to get married are opting for smaller weddings to offset the extra costs. Experts believe this is a positive shift in the industry. Even on a budget, Canadian consumers seek trendy and affordable weddings, which creates space for innovation and shifting trends, whether in fashion or in wedding themes.
Of course, while these trends tend to focus on engaged couples, it’s no excuse for wedding planners to skimp out on looking their best. Below, we’ll be sharing four fashion tips for wedding planners:
Don’t stand out
The number one rule for any wedding planner is to be invisible on the big day. While your help and services are certainly needed — considering the various things that can go wrong on D-day — it’s important not to stand out and take the spotlight away from the bride on her big day. For this reason, wearing all black has become the standard of the wedding industry. Aside from a solid and stylish neutral colour, wearing black also ensures you blend into the background.
Of course, you can technically bend this rule depending on the theme of the wedding. Beach and outdoor weddings, for example, are likely to be more open to non-black colours, and your body will thank you for not having to wear black on a hot, sunny day out.
Accessorise for style and function
The next three tips all fall under the same category—accessories. While these will definitely boost your style points, they can also be beneficial in other ways. While a wedding planner shouldn’t take attention away on the wedding day, that doesn’t mean you can’t accessorise.
Put on some sunglasses
With outdoor weddings becoming especially popular, accessories like sunglasses are another great way for you to blend in with the crowd of wedding guests. However, they can also double as essential sun protection. If you need prescription glasses for your vision, you don’t have to worry about switching your glasses out for your shades. Nowadays, you can easily get prescription sunglasses from online retailers. Models like the Ray-Ban Wayfarer or the Oakley Frogskins are simple and chic with their thick, black frames, which will fit well with your all-black wedding planner attire.
Wear comfy shoes
You’ll also want to ensure that, while stylish, your shoes are comfortable first and foremost. Like everything else, this can vary depending on the theme of the wedding. Casual weddings that are denim-friendly, for example, will be a great time to put on your new Vans shoes, sandals, or boots. For more classic and formal wedding themes, however, you’ll want to stick to the usual dress shoes, loafers, or heels for a more elegant look. Whichever you go with, they must fit snugly as you will do a lot of walking as you make sure everything goes according to plan.
Consider a fanny pack
Finally, you may want to consider a fanny pack — also dubbed the wedding planner’s belt. These may not be the most stylish accessories you’ll wear on the big day, but a well-packed pack or belt will carry everything you may need to do your wedding planner duties. This includes a travel sewing kit, safety pins, bobby pins for any fashion emergencies, tissues, hand sanitiser, and a first aid kit to ensure you and everyone around you stay clean and healthy throughout the busy day.
As a wedding planner, planning out your fashion choices — for both your outfit and your accessories — can serve you stylistically and functionally. Whatever fashion style you go with, remember to focus on your couple and the wedding theme, and you’ll do great.
