Garters are one of the oldest wedding traditions around. Tradition says that it was considered “good luck” for the guests to take a piece of the brides clothing home with them after the wedding.
Apparently the guests would follow the couple back to their bedroom and actually wrestle the bride to the ground to take pieces of her clothing, LOL!
An an old custom in Northern England was for the male guests to rush the
bride at the altar after the ceremony, and remove the garter
from her leg. In the ensuing chaos this usually meant the bride was thrown down and trampled.
Nowadays, it is simply a symbolic ritual for the groom to toss his old life away in exchange for
his new married life.
Gone are the days of simple blue garters. Now there are such an assortment to choose from that totally suits your personality. Here are some of my favourites that I found…Enjoy!
