Thank you to Tristan Da Silva, WPICC for this submission.
What was your inspiration behind this wedding/styled shoot?
We wanted to pay homage to the beautiful island of Haiti. Haiti is located in the Caribbean islands right beside the Dominican Republic. A lot of people don’t know about the country or its culture so our vision was to educate people about the island and incorporates some of its cultures.
What elements influenced the colour palette that was chosen?
The elements that influenced the colour palette were representing the Haitian Culture, so we incorporated the colours of the Haitian Flag which are red, white and blue. We created the theme of this shoot to be red, white and blue. We did this in many places such as cakes, flowers, napkins and more.
What is the feeling that you wanted to invoke with this wedding/photoshoot?
We wanted to create a modern feel for this shoot and not showcase a traditional Haitian wedding but a more modern and “with the times” type look.
What were some of the special or unique touches and elements that you included in this wedding/photoshoot?
An important element to this shoot was incorporating lace. Haiti’s culture includes the use of lace and is known for making runners, mats, coasters and more out of this beautiful material which has so much detail. Lace was incorporated in the charger plate, bits were added to the cake and as well on the wedding gown. Another unique feature was that the menu on the tables was actually written in Haitian Creole and is a typical meal you can find at a Haitian wedding. Also, the model was actually a Haitian woman which was perfect because she felt a very strong connection being able to be apart of this shoot.
Why did you select the venue?
We knew that the Industrial Walls of Serendipity Event Space was different, and would definitely tie in the look and complete this modern wedding.
Why did you select the Wedding Professionals that you chose to work on this wedding/photoshoot?
We chose this power team of wedding professionals as they are some of the most amazing vendors out there that do not get enough credit for their work!
What was the biggest challenge you faced creating this wedding/editorial styled shoot? How did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was trying to incorporate as much of the Haitian Culture as possible while also keeping in mind not to discredit anything about their culture. Every single detail was articulated and preciously chosen for a specific reason.
Based on your experience, do you have any tips for planners or couples who are inspired by your wedding/photoshoot?
Based on our experience, we would suggest that you do your research! Make sure that you are researching the culture, and take the time to dissect each, and every element to make sure you are honouring the culture in the right way.
